My first series this year of “A Day in the Life”.
Super excited to be posting this. And so many things to say.
As a wedding photographer I am used to working quick, thinking quick and just being quick. Everyone that has ever worked with me has said I work crazy fast. WELL I never worked so fast in my life then I did on this day. I thought I was quick but this was a whole different level, and a whole different way of shooting. This was pure photojournalism. No direction from me whatsoever. Which meant I was at the mercy of how fast the environment was working around me. And it was fast. Faster than I was used to regularly working. And it was awesome.

10th Ave is one of my favorite places. I remember when he opened up and when he expanded. It has been 9 years. I was immediatly addicted to 1oth ave the first time I tried them in the little tiny location on 10th ave in belmar. My favorite was the pork mole burrito which is still a favorite of mine.

This was not the first time I photographed Brian and 1oth Ave. When he was still new in the area I had photographed Brian at the restaurant at like 10 O’clock at night. It was quick but it was great. So when I asked him if I could follow him around for a project of mine he was totally up for it. My day started at 9 am. That wasn’t so bad. I’m usually up and ready to go by 7.

I loved that when I walked in Brian was on his Ipad checking things out. I loved that the chairs were all up on the tables and that only the kicthen lights were on. I duno what I was expecting to be honest because I have never done something like this. I think in my mind I was expecting it to be chairs down ready to serve forgetting that it was only 9 am. It was great to see the back end of how a restaurant runs. Brian is pretty chill. Atleast thats how he seems to me. Friendly to everyone that comes in to his place. Which is how it should be.

The first thing you will notice about 10th Ave Burrito is it is not your typical mexican themed restaurant. It is a whole different way of design that most people would never think to do for a restuarant but is what exactly makes this place so cool. I think the best part is Brian believes in using the locals. So the artwork on the walls are all from a local artist, paintings or prints on walls are from local artists. It’s great. When I asked Brian about what made him decide to open up a restaurant his answer simply was , it was all he knew. There was nothing else. When I asked him what the story behind the style of the place is he said he wanted it to be different, he wanted it to stand out, and not be a typical mexican restaurant themed place.

Everything about 10th Ave is awesome.
A day in the life of this business owner was awesome. It was great to shoot outside of my comfort zone and be at the mercy of what surrounded me. It was great to see how certain things went, and were. And just how much goes in to running a single day at a restuarant than most people would think.
As an artist it tested me in a different way. I can’t wait for the next series.

Beth Smith - LOVE THIS……I agree Brain & 10th Ave are both AWESOME. Thanks for a great job showing a day in Brians life and what 10th Ave looks like when none of us are there!
